Welcome To Seattle: Braylon Edwards

Brandon’s website click here

Today I learned that Braylon Edwards was signed by our Seattle Seahawks. He signed a one year deal with the Hawks and there are plenty of pass catchers in Seahawk camp right now so truth be told nothing is promised when it comes to Edwards making the team but I guess we will see.

Edwards career has had it’s up and downs. He can be great one game or even one year then have a terrible year due to be hurt and other problems.

Yes Braylon has been in the NFL police blatter but I am not here to discuss that. Sports Inner City Online is not about that because the majority media does a good job in beating up on African Americans and people of color on sports radio and TV on Sportscenter and other outlets.

One thing I want to point out is Braylon Edwards work in the community for inner city youth. His foundation does a lot of work in the inner city and helps high school students go to college. With out the help of the Braylon Edwards Foundation a lot of kids could not attend college. That is a great thing his foundation has done for the youth. Edwards asked a number of kids to get good grades in school and graduate from high school. If they did he would pay for their ENTIRE college education!! That is a good look by Edwards.

But will sports radio KJR and ESPN 710 here in Seattle discuss this? HELL NO THEY WILL NOT!! Sports radio and the sports media in general want to dwell on the negative when it comes to black football, basketball and baseball players.

Again readers, too many times we hear about African American sports stars doing the wrong thing (I.E sports radio) and hear nothing when they do right. I guess the thing is negativity sells right?

So let’s see what Edwards will bring to the table for the Seattle Seahawks and for our community. Gordon Curvey

Jason Garrett And Cowboys Standing Behind Dez Bryant

ARTICLE FROM si.com (Full story click here)

As a sports fan I have been following the Dez Bryant story that has been in the news the last few days. I have been listening to sports radio hosts like JT The Brick on Fox Sports radio and others put Bryant on full blast because a story is out that he hit his mother. His mom called 911 to say he hit her with a hat or something like that.

But when I was listening to JT The Brick’s radio show, at least four callers who had knowledge of the situation between Dez Bryant and his mom called in. All of them said that Dez Bryant’s mom has a crack problem. They also said that Bryant bought the house she is living in and where the arguement took place. They all said JT was wrong to get on the radio and make Bryant look like a “thug” or “bad guy”.

Also Bryant has tried to help his mom get off of using crack. And also the callers said when Bryant went to the house, his mom and others were using  and smoking crack. And that this was not the first time this has happened and that Dez was fed up with this happening and he got upset.

Readers I AM NOT SAYING IT WAS RIGHT FOR DEZ BRYANT TO HIT HIS MOM IF HE DID THAT. This is very very important for me to say. But having said that. I would be pissed off to if I paid big dollars for a nice house that my mom is in and she is constantly having crack being smoked in the house.

But of course if you read the online blogs and listen to sports radio and read the newspaper, Dez Bryant is being labled as a “thug” because of his past problems and because he might have hit his mother.

I think it is very unfair for folks to say this about Dez Bryant when folks DO NOT know the full story because WE WERE NOT THERE!!! There is always two sides to a story. We cannot take just one side. I was not there. For all we know Dez’s mom could have tried to attack his son with something. We don’t know because we were not there.

Finally I am glad to see Dallas Cowboy head coach Jason Garrett standing behind Bryant. Giving him the support he needs. You CANNOT say Bryant is guilty of something if we do not know the full story. But for sports radio this is nothing new when it comes to blasting African Americans and people of color over the air at will. This has to stop!

Jackson Being Treated VERY Unfair By Media And Fans In Seattle

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon E. Curvey

I have been holding back on my opinions on the QB situation here in town with our Seattle Seahawks. I feel QB Tarvaris Jackson is being treated big time unfair by the media and fans on sports radio (710 ESPN and sportsradio KJR) here in Seattle. It is wrong and not right.

Jackson was hurt last season. Plus he played in back of a patchwork line that “tried” to protect him but the reality is Jackson was hurt and was still running for his life in most games BUT he still let the Hawks to seven wins and it could have been more it things fall right. But the media and fans continue to talk about the negative when it comes to Jackson.

Rookie QB out of Stanford Russell Wilson was a very good college QB, but readers he is only 5-10 1/2. How many NFL QB’s have been a success? The answer is not many. But I hear callers and read online in the Seattle Times and Seattle P.I. that fans say that the Seahawks should keep Wilson and Matt Flynn and release Jackson. I just don’t understand what would make fans say this crap. He is a ROOKIE and is 5-10 1/2!! Let’s get real!!

Now let’s talk about Matt Flynn who was signed to big money (for some unknown reason) by the Hawks. He has started a grand total of TWO NFL GAMES. One of them he played against second stringers in a game that did not count. He threw for 400 or so yards against second or third stringers!! He has NOT proven himself readers.

Not only that the word is his arm is not strong. For sure not as strong as Jackson. So WHY are readers and the media saying he is the starter or should be the starter for the Hawks? There is a thing called training camp!! NO ONE should name   Matt Flynn the starter over Jackson until their is a training camp battle. It is only fair. John Clayton the guru of NFL knowledge says the Hawks should name their starter after only the second pre-season game! Is this fair?

The Seattle Seahawks training camp and pre-season games will be very very interesting. For the first time I am looking forward to watch pre-season games in a few weeks.

Yes when he was with the Vikings he was not the world’s best QB. But Jackson was not the worst too. He has a strong arm and is athletic and still young enough to do well.

But here in Seattle the media and fans continue to talk about how much money was given to Matt Flynn and because of that he should be the starter even before training camp and pre-season games!

Penny Hardaway Is Giving Back To His Community/Unlike Others!!

ARTICLE FROM cnn.com (Full story click here)

I was told about this story by my childhood friend Rodney “J-Rod” Jones. It is about a former NBA star who is giving back to his community down south in Memphis. It is a great story about a cat giving back after he retires from the NBA.

His name is Penny Hardaway. He was a great player for the Orlando Magic. A tall Magic Johnson type player. He could shoot from the inside or cash on a three pointer and he could pass the rock almost. He was a complete player. Young players go and You Tube Penny to see.

He was so big in the 90’s he had a very popular commercial on TV with a talking doll called “Little Penny”. No one had that going on but Penny. He played with Shaq with the Magic.  He was very popular with young kids in the inner city and out. To bad he never won a title. But with MJ in the league it was hard for any team to win a title against the Chicago Bulls.  That was just reality.

But now since his career has ended he is doing things off the court for the inner city. A lot of ex-players don’t have a clue what to do once they depart from the NBA and they spend all the millions they made buying cars and houses and other things while not giving back to the community. It is ashame how players are not giving back like Jamal Crawford and ex-player Shawn Kemp are doing here in Seattle.

We cannot tell a player what to do with their money but it puts a smile on my face to see stories like the Penny Hardaway story. The Magic Johnson story and the Shaq story and others who are reaching back to the community they grew up in and are giving back. Former Seattle Mariner and current Baltimore Oriole player Adam Jones is giving back too. We will be writing about more positive stories like this in the future here on S.I.C.     Gordon Curvey
