“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey
The other day the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers Dr. Jerry Buss passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 8o years old at the time of his death.
As a basketball junky I have always followed three teams in the NBA. Our Seattle Sonics (hopefully I will be able to do this again), the Boston Celtics and the L.A. Lakers. I can never forget “Showtime” with “Big Game” James Worthy, Magic Johnson and the Big Fella Abdul Jabbar.
Dr. Buss brought in Magic in 1979 and it led to 5 NBA titles in the 80’s. It was exciting to watch a Laker game on TV and of course it was exciting to be at a Lakers game. Dr. Buss made the Lakers game a place to be for a lot of Hollywood stars.
It was exciting on the court and off. Other teams followed what Dr. Buss started in Los Angeles with the Laker Girls, turning down the lights at the start of the game to introduce the teams and more. And Jerry Buss made sure the Lakers always had a dominating big man in the middle. Kareem, Shaq and now maybe Dwight Howard.
Of course for 17 years he has had on the Lakers one of greatest players of all time Kobe Bryant. Bryant and Shaq brought Dr. Buss three NBA titles. And Bryant went on to win two more NBA titles with Pau Gasol. Dr. Buss has 10 NBA titles as a owner. This is just great. Of course he is one of the greatest owners of a pro team ever.
It will be very very interesting to see what happens to the Los Angeles Laker now that Dr. Buss is gone. Will they continue to win NBA titles or will big Dwight Howard stay with the Lakers after this season.
Dr. Buss also loved the ladies and truth be told he loved African American ladies and ladies of color. This is a fact that the media is not bringing out. But I am!!RIP Dr. Jerry Buss and thank you for everything you did for NBA basketball and for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Former guest on Seattle’s own “Music Inner City TV”, “The Glove” former Seattle Sonic legend Gary Payton and also another former Sonic star Spencer Haywood are finalist for basketball Hall Of Fame and we are happy about that here in Seattle.
Of course we all know Gary will make it on his first year of being nominated. Don’t know about Haywood but for sure Gary will make it the first time up. Payton is one of the greatest point guards of all time. They called him “The Glove” because of his flat out defensive pressure he put on players. Plus G.P. talked a big game too. And he backed it up!
Gary even talked stuff to Micheal Jordan! He did care who they were. G talked smack to everyone! Payton also did a lot for the inner city of Seattle with his Gary Payton Foundation. Seattle has not had many real big sports stars. But for sure Payton was one and is one. One day his jersey will go up in the new arena we hope to have along with Shawn Kemp “The Reign”.
And Spencer Haywood was a star for the Sonics in the 70’s. He had a deadly turn around jumper and had hops for real and he also did a lot for inner city youth with free basketball camps etc. He was Kemp before Kemp. He also spoke out about how NBA player should be paid in their contracts back in the day. And if young players can leave high school of college early. Truth be told younger players TODAY should thank Haywood for the big cash they are getting today. Younger players need to study up on what Haywood to help players get big money.
We will know in early April if Gary and Spencer will go into the Basketball Hall Of Fame. Gordon Curvey

By gordon on Feb 3, 2013 | In Featured | Comments Off on Sports Radio KJR/Seattle Hires Seattle Times Writer Jerry Brewer
“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey
Those of you who know me realize I have been on a mission against sports radio here in Seattle. Why you ask? It is because of the lack of diversity on KJR and 710 ESPN and now ANOTHER sports station that has started for some reason 1090 “The Fan”.
That’s right Seattle has THREE sports radio stations. That’s crazy. But anyway my main problem was with KJR here in Seattle because they have been on the air for over twenty years and had only had one African American on the on a regular basis and that is a friend of mine Rick Dupree.
Recently I was on “Northwest Sports Tonight” hosted by my friend Paul Silvi on KONG-TV and Northwest Cable News. I talked about the subjects of the NFL “Rooney Rule” that is not working in the NFL and of course, the lack of diversity on sports radio.
I think I did a good job on NWST. Then all of a sudden a few days later BAM! Seattle Times writer Jerry Brewer was hired by KJR to host a daily radio show with Elise Woodward. The show will be called “Elise and Jerry” and it will air from 10am to noon. You can listen online outside of Seattle at www.sportsradiokjr.com And if you are in Western Washington?Oregon it can be viewed On Comcast Sports Net.
I have heard the first few shows and it sounded real good. (pic of myself and Brewer at the recent legendary “Sports Star Of The Year” event here in Seattle). Had a good time at the event and obtained some good interviews. (pic of Elise to the right)
It sounded good because Elise and Jerry KNOW THEIR SPORTS! Unlike others on sports radio in this town. So of course I am happy as a African American was hired at KJR but I am not satisfied. Not at all. ONE IS NOT ENOUGH!!! I want more people of color on KJR and ALL sports radio. But now also it is time for 710 to open up it’s doors to African Americans on the air. Jerry and I had a good chat at the event. It is the first time we had a chance to rap about sports. It was good meeting Jerry.
When you go and look at the website for 710 ESPN here in Seattle, you see all white faces (www.mynorthwest.com) click “710 Sports” The three major sports in America is dominated by African Americans and people of color. I am talking about football, basketball and baseball. So is it fair for 710 and the new station to have a all white on air staff? I say no.
Seattle is a city known for it’s diversity. When I walk down a street in Seattle I see a rainbow of faces. Asians, whites, African Americans, East Africans etc. I don’t see just white faces. So I think sports radio should reflect a street in Seattle. A street in New York or Chicago or Portland. If I would walk into a staff meeting at 710 or 1090 and even with the hiring of Jerry Brewer on KJR, I see 98% white faces. This is not a reflection of the fields and courts of America. It has to change.
But good luck to the “Elise & Jerry” show on KJR! I hope you will have a chance to listen to their shows or podcasts!!

By gordon on Jan 24, 2013 | In Featured | Comments Off on Seattle Sports Radio Host Calls Ray Lewis “A Attention Whore” Over The Air!
KJR HAS POSTED THIS ON THEIR WEBSITE. THROWING HIS COMMENT IN OUR FACES (click here)
“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey
Sports radio KJR host here in Seattle gave a warning the morning before that he was going to say some negative things about Baltimore Raven star and future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis. And the next morning he did what he said what he was going to do against Lewis.
Levy went on a ten min angry against Lewis. I sat in my living room and listened to Levy say just very very unfair things about Ray Lewis. BUT readers one thing he said went way way over the line.
Mitch Levy said Ray Lewis was a “ATTENTION WHORE”. That comment has me angry. It is the worst comment I have heard about a African American sports star. Or maybe anyone. I have not heard Rush or Hannity or Howard Stern or Don Imus use such a negative term against a person. It was wrong on Levy’s part. It was racist on Levy’s part. To make matters worse tonight KJR has posted Levy’s comment about Lewis on it’s website. Click above.
Will Peake or Decker fire or suspend Levy? I think Levy should be at least be suspended for 30 days without pay. Hell Rob Parker was fired at ESPN for his comments about RG3. His comments was NOTHING like Levy calling Ray Lewis “a attention whore”
I went to Google and found a story on a media person who was suspended for saying the late Whitney Houston was a “crack ho”. So I am saying KJR management should suspended or even fire Mitch Levy for his comment about Ray Lewis.
Levy’s rant is built on anger on a radio station with zero African Americans on the air on a regular basis. Their has only been ONE in more than twenty years. It is time for KJR to take a stand against Mitch Levy. His comment’s went way below the belt. Let’s see what they are going to do.
UPDATE: Mitch Levy is on the air this morning so once again, KJR management has allowed their hosts to do and say ANYTHING regarding African Americans and people of color.
