It seems the Seattle Mariners refuse to sign African American players. Currently, the Mariners have zero African Americans on the team.
For the last few years it has been only a few African Americans on the Mariner’s roster. The question is why is this happening?
Right now their are plenty of African American free agents that could be signed. A few of the names are Jay Payton, Garrett Anderson, Cliff Floyd, Ty Wigginton, Emil Brown, and former Mariner superstar, Ken Griffey Jr.
The Mariners could have signed Milton Bradley and Orlando Hudson. But the Mariners passed. They did not go after these players.
In the past, the Mariners did not even interview current Reds manager Dusty Baker for the opening they had for the skipper of team. Baker came out in the media and said he would like to be the manager of the Mariners. He said he likes the fishing up in the area and his wife loves the Northwest. But the Mariners did not call. The question is why?
The Mariners traded Adam Jones. A future star in the league. A possible “five tool” player. Why did the Mariners trade this young fella? I don’t understand.
Recently the Mariners held it’s “Fan Fest” at Safeco Field for the fans. A few Mariner players showed up to sign autographs etc. Of course their was not any African Americans players. So I guess their was not to many African Americans in the house!! The Mariners did not advertise this event in African American owned media in the Seattle area.
The Mariners do little to zero advertsing in African American owned media in the Seattle area. I have asked for advertising from the Mariners to run on Music Inner City TV and online and here at Sports Inner City. I have got a bunch of EXCUSES not to advertise with us. The question is why?
When I go to Safeco Field for interviews during batting practice, I don’t see hardly any African American fans entering the stadium. The only African Americans I see are ushers and a few working on the field. That’s it. The question is why readers?
And you wonder why young African American kids are not playing baseball. They are in the gym shooting hoops or tossing a football. This problem starts with the Seattle Mariners and MLB. The RBI league is not enough! It takes more. Much more!!
Going to a game at Safeco Field is like attending a Elk’s Club meeting or the Rebublican National Convention. No African Americans in sight.
Look at the two teams who played in the World Series this past year the Rays and Phillies. They had young African American players doing their thing. I think it was great so maybe more young African Americans kids were watching and may want to play baseball.
But it seems our Seattle Mariners do not care about signing or keeping African American players. Again, currently, the Mariners have zero African Americans. Sign Grif Jr. He wants to finish his career where he started. Yes he is 39. But let’s sign him to see what he can do. I think it would be great.
The Seattle Mariners seem to not want to sign or keep African Americans. And they have zero African Americans in front office management positions. The question is why? Gordon Curvey
