“One’s Man Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

My hometown team the Seattle Mariners have had a very good week in picking up pitcher Cliff Lee, switch hitter Milton Bradley and cat quick Chone Figgins. Man what a week!!

Lee is one of baseball’s best pitchers. He will join young star Felix Fernandez to give the Mariner a potent one-two punch.

Figgins will add some much needed speed to the lineup. It will be interesting to see if he will bat lead off or will it be Ichiro who has batted in the top position for the last few years.

Bradley is known to be a so called “hot head” but do not get it twisted folks. The dude can play. Hopefully with the legendary Ken Griffey Jr. on the team he will “help” keep Bradley “under control” sort of speak.

The Mariners could still use a big bat to hit 30 homers and 100 RBI’s. Is he out there? We will see but one thing is for sure the Seattle Mariners are making big moves.

Also with the signing of Bradley and Figgins, it might help bring some more African American fans to Safeco Field to watch games and also might get young inner city kids to be interested in playing baseball again.

Because it seems after little league young inner city kids turn to basketball and football. I have saw that Figgins does a lot of community work so hopefully he will do that here in Seattle along with Grif Jr and Bradley etc.

P.S. I am really bothered by this Iverson situation. First I think A.I. has been “blackballed” by the NBA for just being “A.I.” and secondly I am upset at A.I. for all this stuff about himself wanting to start. Allen needs to realize at 34 he is not the same player and he should want to help a team like the Spurs or the Suns or Houston win a ring and if he has to, come off the bench. G.C.

P.S. Sorry to say no one can help this team win games. It is sad Coach Frank had to be the fall guy. It is the way pro sports is. If you are the head coach of a team that is not winning, you are the one that goes first, not the players.

Look at the roster of the Nets. Again no one can win with these players. G.C

P.S. When something happens to someone as famous as Tiger Woods it is big headlines all over the world. So when Woods somehow got into a car accident in the early morning the other day, the story was every where.

Tiger is a money making machine and a sports icon. He also does a lot for inner city youth with his Tiger Woods Foundation. He has build a school for kids and on and on.

He most likely will break the all time wins record of the Bear. He will be called the greatest golfer of all time when he is finished playing. Just like his dad wanted him to be when he taught his little boy how to play golf. Have you seen the video of little Tiger with Bob Hope when he was about three?

Tiger tries to keep his private life private. And he has done a good job of it. Truth be told, the ONLY time I watch golf is when Tiger is near the lead or in the lead. That is the truth. And I am not the only one.

When Tiger plays in a event, the ratings jump up. When he is not playing the ratings go down. It is just that simple. I hope Tiger recovers from his accident and gets back on the golf course real real soon. G.C.

P.S. Seattle native Brandon Roy looked kind of lost the other day when I watched the Trailblazers beat the Pistons on Comcast Sports Net.

The reason is the team is Roy is still getting used to the addition of point guard Andre Miller and Roy seemed to be drifting out on the court. Kind of lost.

Coach Nate McMillan has to find a way to keep everyone happy as far as playing time and shots and so on.

Roy is used to being the man on Portland’s team. And truth be told, he is still the man. Portland needs the ball in Miller’s hands and Roy’s hands. Miller is a guard with a lot of NBA experience and knows how to find open men.

But the bottom line is Portland is Brandon Roy’s team.

Brandon has to learn how to play with Miller and it’s that’s simple. Since us NBA fans here in Seattle do not have the Seattle Sonics to cheer for anymore many of us will follow the team a few hours a way and two cats from Seattle on Portland’s team Brandon Roy and Montell Webster and “Mr. Sonic” head coach Nate.
