Where Are The African American Players And Fans Of Baseball?

ARTICLE FROM salon.com (Full story click here)

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Yesterday I sat and watched our Seattle Mariners game on TV and was very very disappointed in what I saw on my television from Safeco Field. I did not see to many African American faces on the Mariners or the visiting Cleveland Indians or in the stands as fans.

Every time the cameras went to fans in the stands it was a white or Asian face. No African Americans in sight. I think I saw one African American face when the Root TV cameras panned the crowd at beautiful Safeco Field. I was bothered by this readers.

I grew up playing baseball and a fan of the game too. When I grew up their was plenty of African Americans playing in the major leagues. And before I was around on earth there was plenty of African Americans playing too.

Willie Mays, Lou Brock, Willie McCovey, Chilli Davis, Joe Morgan, Ken Griffey Sr., Maury Wills, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, Jackie Robinson, and on and on and on. Where has all the great African American baseball players gone? To me it is a major problem.

I feel it a problem of teams like our home team Mariners and Major League Baseball. They are doing a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE job in reaching out into the inner cities of America to get African American kids interested in playing baseball again. Folks here in Seattle, the Mariners are NOT doing a good job in reaching young African American kids. They are not……period.

Again, when I watch a Mariner game on TV all I see is little white or Asian youngsters at the game and their parents and nothing but white or Asians faces drinking beer etc. It is like watching a crowd at the National Rebublican Convention or a Elks Club Convention in Montana or South Dakata. Sometthing is very wrong.

Little African American kids turn to football and basketball and even soccer after little league baseball. If you watch a high school baseball game or a college baseball game their is very few African Americans in sight on the teams and in the stands as fans. The question is why?

Major League Baseball is not serious about this problem. The Mariners are not taking it serious. As a sports fan I am bothered by this.

As I write this I am watching the Mariners game and they have a lot of kids at the game. I don’t see any African American kids. Mariner broadcaster Dave Sims has a kid come on TV with him during the game and yes……he was not a young African American kid. I think it would have been great to have a African American kid on TV with Sims talking about how he loves the game of baseball and his favorite player etc. The Mariners blew it!! Major League Baseball blew it!!

It is also going to take African American players in the big leagues and past players also to reach back and try to reach young inner city kids to play baseball. Players like Torii Hunter and CeCe Sabathia and Curtis Grandison are reaching back. It is going to take many more players and Major League Baseball to help bring African Americans back to going to games and also playing the game of baseball.

Hall Of Famer Joe Morgan was fired by ESPN from broadcasting games. Why? I think a guy like Morgan is needed to a have a visible face talking baseball on a national scale. ESPN blew it just like Major League Baseball is blowing it when it comes to reaching young African Americans.

Bonds Defense Rests & Goverment Drops One Charge

ARTICLE FROM comcast.net (Full story click here)

Well finally it is getting towards the end of the Barry Bonds steroids case. Thank god for that! I am tired of hearing about it as a sports fan.

Bonds lawyers rested it case without calling one witness. And one count against Bonds was dropped by the federal government. So Bonds will face four charges when it goes to the jury in the next few days.

Here it the thing readers. Their is plenty of people in the media who are lying in the cut to see Bonds go down, They want to see him suffer big time. That is for sure.

It is a pay back for the way Bonds treated the media in his playing days. Truth be told he did not care for the media and the media knew that so now the media wants to see him suffer as a pay back.

All I know is I am tired of hearing about Barry Bonds and steroids. I miss Bonds playing in MLB. Every time he stepped to the plate it was excitement. How far would he hit the ball and will it land in McCovey Cove in San Francisco.

A lot of dirty things about Bonds has come out in the case. Things from his former lady etc. In my opinion that is just a female with a axe to grind against Bonds. So she let it all out on the stand.

So let’s see what the jury decides and we will report about it right here on “Sports Inner City Online”   Gordon Curvey

Rodman & Mullin Make The Basketball Hall Of Fame

ARTICLE FROM nba.com (Full story click here)

It is a happy day for me as a sports fan and basketball junky because Dennis Rodman was named to the Basketball Hall Of Fame. I did not think it would happen but it did and I am happy for Rodman. The “Bad Boy” of the NBA.

Along with Rodman, also named was to the Hall Of Fame was Tex Winter, Artis Gilmore, Harlem Globetrotter great Reece “Goose” Tatum, Tom “Satch” Sanders, Russian great and former Portland center Arvydas Sabonis, Chris Mullin, ladies head coach Tara VanDerveer and finally Herb Magee.

But I am most happy for Rodman. Because he was not a high flying slam dunking scoring champ. He was a GREAT rebounder. One of the greatest rebounders of all times. Yes he was different. Very different. But he got paid to grab rebounds. And Dennis Rodman did just that for the Pistons and other teams during his colorful career.

It will be interesting to see his speech at the ceremony when he formally gets in the Hall. I want to see what he wears and what he is going to say. Dennis Rodman in the Hall Of Fame. That’s great!!   Gordon Curvey

U-Conn beats Butler 53-41 in a very very boring game. It was one of worst title games of all times. And announcer Jim Nantz needs to be replaced by Gus Johnson! Nantz brings nothing to the table as a announcer. More about game via espn.com by clicking here.

Moon Sees Racial Bias When It Comes To Cam Newton

ARTICLE FROM profootballtalk.com (Full story click here)

Former University of Washington great and NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon says Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton of Auburn is being treated wrong and it is racism.

Read the above article to read all of what Moon had to say on this issue. But I will say this, I agree 100% in what Warren is saying in the article. People in the media calling Newton “phony” and talking about his smile etc. He is being treated different.

Also Warren Moon is very upset with the media asking if Newton can run this offense or that offense but others are not being treated this way. He makes a very good point in my opinion.

If anyone can speak on racism and bias it is Moon. When he was at the U-Dub back in the 70’s he was called the “N” word by fans numerous times. It hurt him time and time again. But Moon dealt with it and became a great QB.

I agree with Moon when he says racism is alive and well. Heck, just look at sports radio in this town. And by the way one thing that REALLY makes me mad is listening to sports radio and hearing two people who are not African American discuss racism!! Boy it burns me up!!

I heard two sports radio hosts discuss Moon’s comments and one guy disagreed with Warren when it came to racism and Cam Newton. Readers this sports radio host does not have a clue about the topic so he and other sports radio hosts in this town need to chill out when it comes to racism. They just cannot relate and have zero understanding on the topic. Period.

Finally, it is real strange that the local newspapers and online sites refuse to have Moon’s comments in a prominent position for the readers. I had to search for the article. BUT UW QB Jake Locker was all over the front page online and in the paper. To me readers this is flat out bias. Moon is a Hall Of Famer and ex U.W. great player. If this is not a big sports story then what is?     Gordon Curvey
