Lloyd McClendon Named New Seattle Mariner Manager

ARTICLE FROM sports.yahoo.com (Full story click here)

Tonight I was looking at stories for here at SIC and then BAM I see the headline that the new Seattle Mariner manager is Lloyd McClendon and I am kind of shocked readers. Real shocked.

I am not going to lie folks. I wanted Dusty Baker to be named the new manager of our Mariners. But AGAIN Baker did not even get a freakin interview by the Mariners. It happened in 2002 when the Mariners were seeking a new manager and then it happens again here in 2013. No interview for Baker. A man who has been named Manager of The Year three times and has taken teams to the playoffs.

McClendon has not taken any team to the playoffs. I am just trying to figure out WHY the Mariners have a problem with Dusty. Did Baker say he did not want to be in Seattle or did he say he did not want to manage right now? What is it? I just don’t understand folks.

But the Mariners have decided to hire McClendon. The other fellas in the running has never managed a major league team. Lloyd has. so when I saw his name as someone the Mariners was really looking at I thought Lloyd was just being used as a “token” African American so fans and the media can say the Mariners looked at a African American. But BOOM McClendon was hired. As a African American I am happy the Mariners are giving Lloyd a chance.

Baseball is a sport that is becoming void of African Americans on the field, in the front office and as managers and going to the games. Last year the Astros hired a African American manager and now the Mariners have done the same. It will be VERY interesting to see how sports radio here in Seattle feels about the hiring of McClendon. We will do a follow up story to let you know.     Gordon Curvey
