Shaq
Was Wrong in His "Rap" About Bryant
I was in Los Angeles
for the 2008 B.E.T Awards when the story broke all over L.A and the
sports world about big Shaq's so called "rap" about former
teammate Kobe Bryant.
First of all when you
are in the public eye you have to be very very careful because people
have cell phones and will use them to upload stuff to You Tube. So it
happened to O'Neal.
Let's make it clear.
O'Neal is no rapper. His cd's sold well because of guest artists and
reasonable beats. It ain't his rapping!! If you know anything about
hip-hop/rap you know Shaq cannot flow.
Shaq was wrong in his
rap about Kobe. His use of the words "lick my ass Kobe" was
terrible. Even though it happened in a 21 and over club, in my
opinion it was wrong.
The use of the
"N" word was wrong. In his so called "free style
rap", he even downed "The Captain" Kareem Abdul
Jabbar!! How on earth could he do that? Unreal!
I will say this, Kobe
has not led his team to a title with the Lakers so far and as we
know, Shaq won a title. O'Neal had Dwayne Wade and Kobe had nothing
near the player Wade is. This has to be made clear. One thing is
clear, SHAQ DOES NOT CARE FOR KOBE BRYANT AT ALL!!!
The main reason is
Kobe went behind Shaq's back and told police about Shaq paying
females for sex etc. Which of course O'Neal said was not true. I am
on Shaq's side on this point. Kobe was WRONG!!! Bottom line is Shaq
will NEVER forgive Kobe for that.
But in my opinion,
Shaq should keep his feeling towards Kobe private and just play
hoops. Don't get up on a stage and rap or so called rap about
something that happened a few years ago. Shaq is a role model. A
public figure. You have to watch out and handle yourself like a role
model when you are in the private eye.
Finally it is funny
listening to people giving their opinion on hip-hop/rap on sports
radio. Something they know NOTHING about!! Nothing!! One day I hope
Shaq will forgive Kobe for what he did. Will it happen? Don't think
so. G.C
Venus
Hits Record Serve At Wimbledon
Defending Wimbledon
ladies champ and former guest on Seattle's Music Inner City, Venus
Williams served out a match at love, finishing with a 127 mph
delivery, the fastest recorded by a lady at Wimbledon.
"Yeah, 127 is a
good way to end it," said Williams, who holds the WTA Tour
record at 129 mph.
Celtics
Win 17th NBA Title!!
Boston (AP) On a new
parquet floor below aging championship banners, the Boston Celtics
won their 17th NBA title and a first one for Paul Pierce, Kevin
Garnett and (former Sonic) Ray Allen.
Lifted by ear
splitting chants of "Beat L.A." from their adoring crowd,
which included Boston legend (and Seattle are resident) Bill Russell,
John Havlicek and JoJo White, the Celtics concluded a shocking
rebound of a season with a stunning 131-92 blowout over the Los
Angeles Lakers in Game 6.
Garnett scored 26
points with 14 rebounds, Allen scored 26 points and Pierce, the
finals MVP, added 17 as the Celtics, a 24 win team a year ago,
wrapped up their first crown since 1986.
This was total
domination. The Celtics obliterated the Lakers, who were trying to
become the first team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals.
Garnett and Allen were
All-Stars in other cities, stuck in Minnesota and Allen (here in
Seattle), respectively, on teams going nowhere. But brought together
in trades last summer by Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, a
member of the '86 Celtics champions, they joined Pierce and formed a
bond and now the Boston Celtics are the world champs.

Our Sonics Rally Report
Just came back from a
rally in front of the King County Court House here in Seattle to say
"Save Our Sonics" to all the fans of the NBA here in town
and to let Sonic owner Clay Bennett know we are serious about keeping
our team here in Seattle. Bennett and the City had their first day in
court today (June 16th).
Big shout out to
"Save Our Sonics" and "SonicCentral" to the very
very hard work in getting the word out about the rally.

Man" McDainiels came though to talk to the crowd of about
2,000 or more. Sports Inner City did a short interview GP and you

Let's
Tell The Truth About Bradley Incident
Let's be real about
the incident the other day with Texas Ranger player Milton Bradley
and a TV announcer for the Kansas City Royals Ryan Lefebvre. Let's be
real folks.
In case you don't know
what happened, Bradley stormed up four flights of Kuffman Stadium
stairs in KC looking for Lefebvre after the Rangers 11-5 win.
"I came in to
watch my at bat on the video and all of a sudden I heard my
name," Bradley said. "It was a spiel like five minutes out
of the blue about me. I didn't think anything he was saying was
positive. I wanted to introduce myself and tell him the stuff you're
talking about is uncalled for."
Rangers president
Nolan Ryan told ESPN.com that he didn't hear Lefebvre's comments on
the broadcast but added that Bradley has done an admirable job of
trying to put his behavioral problems in the past.
Lefebvre said his
comments were intended to praise Josh Hamilton of the Rangers who
missed nearly four years of pro ball with cocaine and alcohol
addictions, rather than tear down Bradley.
"It was a
conversation about how Hamilton has turned his life around and has
been accountable for his mistakes. Right now, it seems like the
baseball world and fans are rooting for him but it does not seem like
Milton Bradley has done the same thing in his life."
First of all how on
earth can this guy Lefebvre say such a negative stuff over the air
regarding Bradley? He has not been in trouble at a club or has not
been caught with drugs or has not had a cocaine or drinking problem
like Hamilton.
In the past Bradley
has had a problem with his temper which has been under control as Mr.
Ryan said in his comments. By the way is it real strange the KC
announcer did not discuss that Bradley is leading the league as I
write this at a .333 average and a .629 slugging percentage. Lefebvre
decided to bash Bradley and praise Hamilton. That was flat out wrong
on the part of Lefebvre.
Bradley said
"I've done some things that have been construed as violent or
temperamental, but I've never physically harmed anyone. You can talk
to any of my teammates I've played with and the most they will tell
you about me is I'm moody. I love to laugh and have fun, but when I'm
out on the field it's strictly business. It's my life. I take a lot
of pride in what I do."
It seems some
announcers on TV and in sports radio want to just get behind the
microphone and say negative things about players not knowing
sometimes that player may be listening and may not like what is being
said.
Finally it seems
minority players seem to be talked about on sports radio and in the
media in a negative light much more often than non-minority players.
This story is a perfect example. I feel the announcer should say he
is sorry to Bradley on the air. He is due that respect. In the future
I will be doing a piece on sports radio and how minorities are
treated.
Finally these kind of
stories is why I started "Sports Inner City Online". To try
to "balance" the stories on people of color in the sports
world. Hope you keep coming back to read our stories. If you have a
comment please e-mail us at gcurvey@yahoo.com

Griffey
Jr. Blasts 600 Career Home Run
Miami (AP) Former
Seattle Mariner Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 600th home run recently
completing his long ascent and becoming the sixth player in history
to reach that milestone.
The Cincinnati Reds
outfielder homered off Forida lefty and former Washington State
player player, Mark Hendrickson in the first inning of the Reds 9-4
victory against the marlins. Griffey joined Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron,
Babe Ruth and Willie Mays in the 600 home run club.
Griffey received a
standing ovation from the crowd of 16,003 and responded by coming out
of the Reds dugout and waving his helmet to the fans.
Manager Dusty Baker
has managed the last three players to achieve the milestone. Bonds in
San Francisco, Sosa in Chicago and now Griffey Jr. He was there for
Bonds 600th on Aug 9, 2002.
The slugger hasn't
enjoyed many golden moments since the Reds got him from the mariners
in 2000. This will rank as one of his best with the Reds and maybe
his last, given that he's in the last year of his contract. Congrates
to Grif Jr from Sports Inner City!
Suns
Hire Porter To Succeed D'Antoni As Coach
The Phoenix Suns named
Terry Porter as their next head coach ending the club's ,month long
search to succeed former coach Mike D'Antoni.
The 45 year old Porter
played in the NBA for 17 years and teamed with Suns general manager
Steve Kerr in San Antonio.
Porter signed a three
year deal worth about $7 million. Porter emerged from an extensive
list of candidates interviewed by the Suns. In the running with
Porter was Elston Turner of Houston, Tyrone Corbin of Utah and Mike
Budenhoizer of San Antonio.
Porter was the only
one with head coaching experience, with two seasons at the helm of
the Milwaukee Bucks.
Porter will become the
Suns seventh coach since 1993, when they made their last NBA Finals
appearance. G.C
Moss
Joins NASCAR Craftsman Series
NFL player Randy Moss
is a successful player. You would be hard pressed to find any sports
fan who does not know his name. Now Moss is looking to push that
success into an new direction. The world of professional auto racing.
Moss has announced
that Moss Motorsports will fire up their engines for the 2009 racing
season. Moss will debut in the world of auto racing by entering the
professional truck racing circuit of NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series.
Littlie is known at this time as to many of the details surrounding
the racing team that Randy Moss has selected. There has been no
mention of the team leader, driver or even who the sponsor will
be-just word from Randy that the 2009 season is the target for his
NASCAR racing team.
However, do not take
the lack of details on his team serious because Moss is no stranger
to the world of auto racing. Moss sponsors a dirt track program in
his home state of West Virginia, and is a Goodwill Ambassador to the
Urban Youth Racing School in Philadelphia.
People are starting to
wonder if 2009 will be the year that Randy Moss opens the door for
minorities to be successful in NASCAR auto racing. There is already a
lot of speculation that Moss Motorsports will be using an African
American driver, but such reports are purely rumors at this
point G.C
Steelers
Owner Rooney Endorses Obama's Bid
Pittsburgh (AP)
Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney has endorsed Democratic Sen,
Barack Obama's presidential bid.
The 75-year old
Rooney said endorsing political
candidates is not something he
regularly does.
"As a
grandfather and a citizen if this community, I think Barack Obama's
thoughtful, strategic approach is important to America," Rooney
said. "When I hear how excited young people seem to be when they
talk about this man, I believe he will do what is best for them,
which is to inspire them to be great Americans."
The Obama campaign said
the Illinois senator and Rooney met recently after Obama spoke at a
meeting of the Alliance for American Manufacturing. Last month former
Steelers running backs Franco Harris and Jerome Bettis also endorsed
Obama.
Well it has come
down to this in our fight to keep the Seattle Sonics in town.
Former owner Howard
Schultz is going to sue the current ownership to get the team back,
on the basis that the new owners violated the sale contract by not
making a good faith effort to keep the Sonics here in Seattle.
Word is Schultz has
hired a lawyer, Seattle based attorney Richard Yarmuth, and that
Yarmuth plans to sue the current Sonics ownership group, Professional
Basketball Club LLC, led by Clay Bennett, in the next two weeks.
Bennett and his ownership group plan to move the team to Oklahoma
City.
Yarmuth has said
that Schultz will not sue for monetary damage and that the lawsuit
will seek to rescind the July 2006 sale based on the fact that
Bennett's group always planned to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City.
Bennett bought the Sonics and its sister team in the WNBA, the Storm,
for $350 million, and he agreed to make a good faith effort to keep
the clubs in Seattle. We here at Sports Inner City will have the
latest news on this issue. The fight to keep the Seattle Sonics in
Seattle. G.C
How
Can The Mariners Celebrate This Day?
On April 15th, Major
League Baseball celebrated "Jackie Robinson Day" at
games all over the league.
The Mariners have
one African Americans on the team, zero African
Americans in front
office management positions and do little to zero marketing in
African American media in the Seattle area. That means the Facts and
Medium newspapers and my program, Music Inner City TV/Online.
Mariner broadcaster
Dave Sims and Arthur Rhodes are the only visible African American in the Mariner
organization. How can this be?
The Angels were in
town and they had five African Americans in the starting lineup
playing against a team at that time with zero on the whole team. Arthur
Rhodes was brought up on a few days ago.
The Mariners just
cut a young African American player who was not given a chance to do
anything. The manager said they needed "a change" and
brought up a fella who hit .245 last year and four homers. This past
summer, the Mariners traded Adam Jones. It seems when ever a African
American player comes here, they are quickly gone. A few years ago,
when the Mariners were looking for a new manager, they DID NOT even
interview current Red's manager Dusty Baker who came out and said
he was interested in the position.
If Jackie Robinson's
widow Rachel & his daughter visited Seattle on Jackie
Robinson Day they would be very disappointed. Knowing the Seattle
Mariners have a almost total exclusion of African Americans on the
field and off. The Mariners should be ashamed of themselves for
celebrating Jackie Robinson Day! Gordon Curvey

Thanks
For Making Me Happy
As I write this, today
might be the last game in Seattle of our Seattle Sonics. A team which
has a forty-one year history in this town. A team which has brought us
our only major sports world title in 1979. I feel truly depressed and
truly sad as a sports fan.
No matter who is at
fault, it is the fans that will suffer. I put the blame on the owner of
Starbucks and the former majority owner of the Sonics, Howard Schultz
for selling the team to Clay Bennett who in case you do not know, wants
to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City.
As I sit here and
think about the history of the Sonics I think of Spencer Haywood,
"Downtown" Fred Brown, Gary Payton, my good friend, Shawn
Kemp, Dale Ellis, "The X Man", Sam Perkins, Nate McMillan,
Lenny Wilkens, Jack Sikma, Rachard Lewis, Ray Allen, Slick Watts, Det,
Kevin Calabro (Sonic broadcast) and Marques Johnson together
broadcasting games, the original Sonics broadcaster, "The
Voice" Bob Blackburn and much much more!! Heck what about G.P and
Kemps jersey hanging up in the rafters?
The NBA will not be
the same if our Sonics are gone. Watching the NBA playoffs will not be
the same. NBA fans in Seattle will not be able to watch young star,
Kevin Durant grow as a man and as a player.
No more "Rally In
The Alley" before a Sonic playoff game with fans being happy to
support our team in the playoffs. We will miss all this and more if our
team leaves Seattle. How can this happen. It is wrong for a team to
leave a city that is in the top fifteen radio/tv market, to the forty
fifth market in O.C!!
Let's hope the NBA
owners will be on our side. Let's hope a lawsuit to keep our team here
at least until 2010 when the current lease for Key Arena runs out.
Let's hope our Governor can pull some strings for us. As the Rev Jesse
Jackson says "Let's keep hope alive" for our team to stay in
Seattle. If not, we will be saying what the late Bob Hope said for
years and years...."Thanks for the memories". I want to thank
the Seattle Sonics for making me happy as a NBA fan and as Sonic fan.
If our team leaves I will be truly sad and truly depressed.
