Washington Nationals Suffering Big Time Without Dusty Baker

ARTICLE FROM nbcsports.com (Full article click here)

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Sports fans I continue to see articles online about the unfair firing of Dusty Baker by the Washington Nationals.

Remember Baker was fired by the Nats AFTER ONLY TWO SEASONS IN WHICH HE WON TWO DIVISION TITLES! THIS IS CRAZY!

It is beyond me and many many others how and why this happened. Baker is still wondering how and why this happened. Washington National players are still wondering how and why this happened. It is just crazy.

Especially when you see how the Nats are not doing well so far this season. Hanging around .500 for the season. They are a huge disappointment this season.

Keep in mind also their has been player outbursts and even a freakin team meeting right before the All-Star break. This stuff never happened under Baker. Why you may ask? Because the team was winning games that’s why!

I have called the Washington Nationals team offices to get a answer as to why Baker was fired after last season. And never get a front office person on the phone but others said “they wanted to go in another direction” SAY WHAT?? A direction of not winning games for the fans of the Nats? What does that mean? I just do not understand sports fans. Do you?

Dave Martinez is the current manager of the Washington Nationals. In my opinion he has not done a good job. Heck just look at the teams record. Plus let’s tell the truth.

If Martinez does not lead the team to the playoffs and then the World Series, he will be a failure after Dusty Baker took the Nats to the playoffs two years in a row.

No, Baker did not take the Nats to the Series but was that a reason to fire him? I say a big fat no! And I cannot type this blog without mentioning that right now in MLB, their is only ONE African American manager, Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers who I was lucky enough to land a interview with here in Seattle. Details soon on my Roberts interview.

It is as obvious as two left shoes that the Nationals miss the leadership of Dusty Baker. I will never understand why the front office of the Nationals sat in a room and said they want to “go in another direction” and fire Baker. Well readers as we go into the month of September the “other direction” is downhill.

The man I interviewed here in Seattle at Safeco Field, Dave Roberts the manager of the L.A. Dodgers is the only African American manager in baseball.

There should be at least one more and that person is Dusty Baker. Instead of being at home or going fishing, he should be managing a MLB ball club. This is a fact.

The Marketing Of Major League Baseball Is TERRIBLE!!

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

Here is something that is a fact. Major League Baseball is stuck in 1948. Last time I checked it is 2018. The marketing of MLB is one word…TERRIBLE. The question is why is this going on?

Why is MLB not reaching young inner city African American youth? Why is it by age 12 young African American kids turn to hoops and football? Do you disagree with me? Well go to any major city and attend a high school baseball game. You will basically see all white teams. As a result, college baseball teams are basically all white teams. This is very true.

If you have a minute grab your remote and turn on a college baseball playoff game and count the amount of black faces you see on college teams. Hell their are no black faces in the stadium! No black faces in sight!

Something is very very wrong in my strong opinion. One of the reasons why young inner city kids turn to football and hoops is because who they see on TV selling McDonald’s or Burger King  or Wendy’s food, or sneakers, or cars, or soft drinks and more.

They see Curry, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Charles Barkley, Shaq, Payton Manning, Brett Farve, Aaron Rodgers, Odell Beckham Jr, Cam Newton, our own Russell Wilson, Paul George, Chris Paul, Klay Thompson, JJ Watt, Drew Brees, Kyrie Irving (who has a movie coming out), Tony Gonzales, MJ, Damian Lillard and even Serena, Danica Patrick, Dale Jr, Rickie Fowler and more.

When it comes to MLB, I just see former player Frank Thomas, Bo Jackson (who played two sports), Johnny Bench and that’s basically it.  THIS IS FLAT OUT SHOCKING SPORTS FANS!! Why is this happening?

I am shocked the amount of fans who turn out to watch MLB games. Because the marketing of the game SUCKS!! The games are filled with white fans watching a sport that is a “white sport” in America. Former Seattle Mariner Adam Jones said just that. He is telling the truth folks. It just is. Question is who is marketable in MLB? Truth be told, I cannot name a marketable MLB player.

Is it because MLB players have zero personality? I say YES! Listen to a interview with a MLB player. It is extremely boring. They talk like a family member just died or their dog ran away. BORING!! No marketable MLB players.

Most young inner city African American youth cannot name more than two or three MLB players (if that) BUT can tell you KD’s show size, Curry’s scoring average and how many rebounds Anthony Davis averaged in the 2017-2018 season.

The kids can tell you also when the NFL and NBA draft is and who got drafted by what team. Do you think African American kids can tell about the MLB draft and when it is and who got drafted? THE ANSWER IS HELL NO!!

MLB is boring. Their needs to be a 20 sec pitch count and batters need to stop messing with their batting gloves after every damn pitch!! EVEN WHEN THEY DO NOT SWING!! The game is filled with players who wear their pants legs pulled up to their knees like back in the old days of baseball. Young inner city kids ain’t with that. Ain’t feeling that!! It ain’t “cool”.

The World Fame 100 list is out for sports and their is ZERO MLB player on the 100 list. Let me repeat ZERO! There is a reason for that ladies and gentlemen and that is the TERRIBLE marketing of MLB. How the sport has not grabbed the “hip-hop generation” like the NBA and NFL has. Just look at a commercial for the NBA or NFL and look at a “corny” MLB commercial with a white dad and their kid with a glove at a game.

Finally with the help of the Mariners I have for years been allowed to attend batting practice to conduct short interviews with players. I go their to interview the few African American players that are in MLB. I have not been busy on this end folks. Most teams that come to Safeco to play have zero African American players for me to interview. This is very very sad. More stories coming up soon about the lack of marketing of MLB.

Do We Take Lebron James Greatness For Granted?

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

(Boston, MA, 01/03/18) Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown guards Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James during the first half of the NBA game at the TD Garden on Wednesday, January 03, 2018. Staff photo by Matt Stone

Back in 2002 I heard about this fella in high school who is crazy good out of Ohio. So good he can go into the NBA at the age of 15 or 16. He was that good in high school ladies and gentlemen. This young fella was named Lebron James.

He was one of the most hyped up high school players since Lew Alcindor aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar. And James has lived up to the hype. He has turned into one of the greatest players of all time. Some say he might be better than MJ.  James is 6-8  and 280 is strength and speed. He can play all positions on the court. He can play point, small forward and power forward and even center. Not many players can do this effectively.

James is very intelligent and is a student of the game. He can tell you about great players of past like Elgin Baylor and Wilt and Jerry West and The Big O and many more. He did not go to college but he is no dummy. This is a fact.

Look at what he has done. He might be in the NBA Finals AGAIN with the Cavs. Year after year after year Lebron is playing in the NBA Finals. With Cavs or the Heat, James is in the freakin Finals every year. If it was anyone else sports fans would say they are tired of seeing James in the Finals. I have not heard anyone say they are tired of James in the Finals I just have not. Sports fans love to watch greatness. In James we are watching greatness.

This fella is 33 years old and is showing zero signs of slowing down. Game after game after game, Lebron is getting 40 points, 15 rebounds and six dimes. He is making others on the Cavs better. He is pushing the Cavs to again be in the NBA Finals to maybe again match up against KD, Curry and Klay and the Golden State Warriors.

Everyone wants to see the Cavs-GS in the Finals again. I know ABC does. As I type this, the Celtics are pushing the Cavs. Making it hard for the Cavs to maybe be in the Finals again.  But folks while we watch great games in the playoffs by Curry, KD and others,  NO ONE can match Lebron and his great play in the 2018 NBA Playoffs. We are watching pure greatness by James. It is unreal folks.

Lebron is playing so great I wonder do sports take Lebron’s greatness for granted. After a 40-15-6 game do we say “Oh it is just another game by Lebron”. I know for sure I do not say that. As a NBA junky,  I KNOW I AM WATCHING GREATNESS!!

One thing for sure and that is Lebron James is a freak of nature! I hope all NBA junkies will realizing what we are watching. We are watching greatness by Lebron James and I know their will not be many if any one else like him.

GM Has Diversity On One Station But None On Another

“One Man’s Opinion” by Gordon Curvey

This is a follow up to my article concerning sports radio in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Mainly sports radio KJR. I am just amazed what is going on with diversity or the lack of diversity.

Rich Moore is basically running sports radio KJR (which he has for years and years) and he also running “Rip City Radio” 620am in Portland, Oregon. But something very very strange is going on and here it is. Sportsradio KJR has a more than 26 year history of almost total lack of diversity except for Jerry Brewer for a few years.

The sports world is full of diversity. The world is full of diversity. When I walk in downtown Seattle I see a rainbow of faces and not just white faces like the all white regular on air staff on KJR. It seems Moore does not give a damn. But for some unknown reason 620am Rip City Radio is full of regular African American voices.

Of course issues of race and racism comes up all the time and their is no way all white hosts can relate to and understand what we as African Americans and people of color go through on a daily basis. KJR just brought on more white voices on as regular hosts including a retreat from the past. I just do not understand.

“Rip City Radio” down the road represents in my opinion is what sports radio should be and what KJR should be and that is a DIVERSITY of opinions by a DIVERSITY of faces. Not just white faces.

One host on KJR, Dave Mahler has been at the station 23 to 24 years and as a result it seems he is allowed to walk on water and say anything over the air and get away with it. To me this is very very unfair and wrong.

Mahler and other KJR hosts have tried to quiet me down by putting stupid blocks on me via social media and even email. Just plain ridiculous readers.

Putting blocks on me instead of listening to what I have to say and to make changes in it’s all white regular on air staff. It again shows me the country club, good ole boy network atmosphere at KJR will continue and this is sad and this is wrong. I wish all African American Seattle Seahawks and UW Huskies and others (not many African Americans on the Mariners) would boycott sports radio KJR until it improves it’s diversity over the air. Right now it is all white voices all day and all night. This is wrong.

(Update) KJR has hired former Seahawk player Cliff Avril to be on the air from 10am to 1pm during the week.
